Lifehacker has an article posted on how to set up free push email, contacts and calendar on the iPhone. This is an alternative to either paying for a MobileMe account or having a corporate Exchange server.

There is another alternative for push email however. Yahoo email accounts continue to push email messages to the iPhone. I have verified that my Yahoo email account continues to receive email messages via push on my original iPhone running OS 2.0.
