WikipediaPick: Freethought

April 17th, 2008 Posted in WikipediaPick

I’m going to try something new to get a break from all the coding examples I’ve been posting. It’s simple, I’ll pick a Wikipedia topic and post about it. The topic can be anything I feel like. I’ll learn something and you might also.

Freethought

Freethought is a philosophical viewpoint that holds that beliefs should be formed on the basis of science and logic and not be influenced by emotion, authority, tradition, or any dogma. The cognitive application of freethought is known as freethinking, and practitioners of freethought are known as freethinkers.

I never really thought about it before but I guess I’m a freethinker. When you think about it innovation comes from freethought. If we always just followed tradition there wouldn’t be much need to come up with new and better ways to do things. Accepting something as true just because someone else says it true with no evidence doesn’t make much sense to me. If long ago we accepted that the “earth is flat” the world would be very different today.

Learn to question everything. Be wary of phrases like “We’ve always don’t it that way.” or “That’s just how it is.” Free you mind.
